I need to add syncronised lyrics text to a file.

To add lyrics to the file WITHOUT including a melody line requires some form of editing.
One of the most simple applications is within GNMIDI software.
It's simply a matter of cut & paste the lyrics, then "tap" at the locations where lyrics are required.
Try:
www.gnmidi.com/
Make sure GNMIDI works on your computer and its operating system.

I need to REMOVE the melody from the KAR (Karaoke) files.

All BandTrax KAR (Karaoke) files have the melody line on MIDI Channel #4.
To remove the melody, delete Channel #4 data.
To retain the "lyrics" but not hear the melody, mute or set the VOLUME to 0 for Channel #4

I need to hear the MIDIfiles thru a better sound reproduction source than the standard PC sound source.

Most computer sound cards are not the required quality to reproduce professional MIDIfiles.
To obtain better quality together with other useful features we recommend using the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas.
The software sounds are compatible with the Roland SC55(MkII), SC88 & SC88Pro.
It is multitimbral with 16 parts and a maximum of 128 voices. It comes with 902 sounds and 26 drum sets (using SC-88Pro Map-compatible sound sets) built in (you can also switch to SC-55 Map-compatible and SC-88 Map-compatible sound sets).
Even better, use a Roland Sound Canvas hardware device via MIDI. Check that you personally like the sounds before obtaining anything.
Make sure the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas works on your computer and its operating system.

You may also try using Soundfonts or VST's. These applications are far beyond any explanation here, but can provide stunning results.

I need to convert from format 1 to format 0 (or format 0 to format 1)

If you have MIDIfile editing software installed, you may find that this software will convert formats. e.g. Cakewalk will offer an option when saving.
Possibly the most universal "editor" for data change is GNMIDI. This will format convert as well as offer many more features for changing MIDIfiles.
Try:
www.gnmidi.com/
Make sure GNMIDI works on your computer and its operating system.

I need to convert the MIDIfiles to audio so I can use them on a CD or MP3 player

Many software applications and emulators will do this.
Just select the MIDIfiles you want converted then select AUDIO CONVERT or EXPORT AS AUDIO.
Make sure the software works on your computer and its operating system.

I need to quickly create a MIDIfile that I can use. It doesn't need to be exact, just a rough arrangement of a certain song.

Don't laugh ........ but Band-In-A-Box Pro has some very useful functions. It is nothing like the "old" Band-In-A-Box. This will let you quickly create a useable arrangement.
To take the next step, you can take the BIAB arrangement into your favourite MIDI editing software and then do some serious creating/editing.
Make sure Band-In-A-Box works on your computer and its operating system.
